OSBIE Presentations and SIPI: a focus on injury prevention

(reproduced from our partner Ontario School Boards Insurance Exchange “Blog Digest” for May 23, 2017)

OSBIE Presentations – Are You Missing Out?

The OSBIE’s Risk Management department has been working with several OSBIE members providing consultation on draft SIPI (Student Injury Prevention Initiative) plans and data on student injuries from the incident report database.  We are thrilled with the synergy that this initiative has with OSBIE’s own focus on injury prevention through proactive and systemic risk management.

Looking for SIPI training?

“Tell me and I forget. Teach me and I remember. Involve me and I learn.”- Benjamin Franklin

One component of SIPI can include injury prevention training.  A “process to develop or adopt ongoing, sustainable SIPI-related training for: Joint Health and Safety Committee members, School administrators (e.g., principals, vice-principals), Facilities and maintenance staff who support higher-risk learning environments.”

There’s no need for OSBIE members to reinvent the wheel; these services are provided to OSBIE liability members at no charge.

Through our presentations given across the province, we attempt to give our audience a peek into OSBIE’s world of insurance, litigation and risk management to give them awareness for their respective positions at the school board.  We also answer a variety of questions regarding field trips, transportation, waivers, supervision, limitation periods, inspections etc.  However, the main focus of our presentations is injury prevention!

Here are a few highlights:

Since the beginning of the 2016/2017 school year, we’ve presented to almost 1,500 School Board employees from various departments within the education sector!

In May, I had the pleasure of providing a presentation at the International Concussion Summit hosted by the DSB of Niagara. The enthusiasm of the group was quite infectious, and it reflects the desire to discuss and learn about educational risk management issues surrounding concussion response protocols and physical education programs that are shared by our OSBIE members.

Last month, Mark delivered a customized workshop focused on risk management for international travel!  This new presentation was created as part of one member school board’s mandatory training program for teachers and chaperones participating in school board approved international travel excursions.

We continue to collaborate with the facilities groups with a presentation titled “Site Inspections…Where are YOUR Risks?”  The 1 hour session describes occupier’s liability and the duty of care required by the board and then it’s all pictures showing common school hazards taken from the HELP audits.  Allison was honoured to be called back for a 3rd year in a row to share tales from audit road with facility employees at their PD day session back in March.

Last week, Amanda and I participated in a PD Activity Day where we set up the OSBIE booth and had a chance to discuss insurance coverage and risk management with secondary school principals, teachers and EAs at this board-wide event with 700 attendees.

Haven’t booked an OSBIE presentation lately? Want to learn more about our presentation services?

Of course, all presentations are subject to staff availability so book early!

About This Online Resource

An area of need identified by board staff with responsibility for student injury prevention is the ability to share best practices and information, ask questions, and access links to provincial student injury prevention partners.

As part of SIPI Phase Three, this online interactive resource includes both public and members-only areas. The members-only area allows boards to share resources, ask questions, and connect with fellow colleagues as they further develop student injury prevention plans and resources.
