CODE’s Health and Safety guides and checklists help create and sustain a positive safety culture within schools.
Developed by a team of educators and health and safety professionals, CODE’s Health and Safety resources are invaluable aids for Student Injury Prevention leads (including principals, vice-principals, supervisory officers and subject leaders in the system) in promoting and addressing health and safety (H&S) provisions and requirements in schools.
The CODE (Council of Ontario Directors of Education) guides and checklists offer school leaders examples, tips and suggestions for better understanding and engagement in their responsibilities and duties regarding health and safety in science labs and technological education facilities.
Through a series of consultations with school board H&S representatives and supporting partner organizations (such as the Public Services Health & Safety Association), the CODE team responsible for compiling these resources developed a set of markers (called “look fors”) that are characteristic of a safe learning environment. While these markers (or checklists) are not intended to be comprehensive in nature, they do provide the basis for an open and collaborative dialogue between student safety leads and teachers.
Educators, health and safety officers, and school and board administrators are encouraged to download the CODE health and safety guides which may be helpful to them as they implement the requirements of the Student Injury Prevention Initiative.
